Lynn's Extended Note
English 2010 has been an unexpected opportunity and discovery. It has proven that over the years, I have had great opportunities provided to me when it comes to writing and the research process. I was reminded that research is the most time consuming part of the writing process, and through research an individual can fine tune a project and fill in the gaps that may exist.
Each of the editors learned something different about the writing process through different genres. I learned writing and researching is more fun in different genres, especially when it is in different multi-media formats. I also learned a writer can get just as much important information placed into a multi-media format as they can in a standard written paper.
The revision process as a group, taught us that the writing process is made easier with a group that can provide constructive quality peer reviews. When writing a paper it is read by the writer so many times that it is good to have another viewpoint. Also, when you think you have made a point clear others may not. Having one or two other points of view allows the writer to fill in the gaps they may not have known existed. Having a peer review group to work with is similar to the professional writing process where there are multiple editors reviewing a piece multiple times. This allows for much less error.
Providing advice to other groups is always difficult because each group is so very different. There for I can only suggest to listen to your peers and try to incorporate as much as you can of their suggestions into your writing. As long as it doesn't change the integrity, purpose, or meaning of the writing – it is usually beneficial to the piece. Also, be willing to communicate openly for an opportunity for success. Make it clear up front what is expected from each individual and why, so everyone knows what to expect from each participant. Try to be as flexible as possible with what goes into the project and how it is created. Peers can help provide a great outside view as to why one thing should be put in over another.
For example I picked my Replacement Poem due to the recommendation of Professor Lewis. I chose the comic Haiku as the other half because it seemed the best of my remaining small projects, but chose to NOT revise it at the suggestion of those in my group. I chose to revise my position paper because suggestions had been made of how to improve it that seemed to really bring it around to a piece of greater quality and provide a better strength to it.
I had planned on putting in my report until it was suggested I use the Replacement Poem. My report is a good piece that has a lot of information and value relating to my topic. However, since I transitioned my Flash memoir into the same, 3D animation or multi-media format it seemed the better paper to leave out - This meant keeping the position paper, which was a different video format. My profile was excluded solely because I felt it wasn't as good of quality of work as the other papers. Finally translating my Flash memoir seemed the natural thing to do because it was the only one not previously done in a multi-media format.
Working on group project is often complicated due to the effects it can have on each individual’s grades. It is great that each person has a different responsibility. That being said it seems it wouldn't have mattered with this group of ladies. Each person has worked hard to ensure a fulfillment of responsibilities and yet is also not afraid to work as a group and provide input to each other in relation to those responsibilities. This group has worked well as a group! Each contributed time, talent, and energy to the project. Each individual has a different style. This bodes well for the project because it provides different perspectives and abilities allowing the online magazine to be its best. Saying Election Ups and Downs is lacking in anything, would be saying that the editors did not step up to the plate and fulfill their responsibilities to the fullest. This is not the case. Others may see gaps they would fill, as has been experienced and discussed throughout the evaluation of peer reviews. However, this is the finest of work in relation to the editors who have labored on this project. This project is definitely the Up and not the Down of each of its editor’s works.
