Anne's Extended Note
For the magazine, I wanted to include my best pieces. The ones that showcased my abilities as a writer. I included my profile paper for that specific reason. I had never written in that medium before and it was certainly a struggle. But with help from students in my class as well as Professor Kati Lewis, my profile turned out to be a great piece. It is unique because instead of choosing a specific person, I chose a Super PAC which the Supreme Court deemed a "person" in the Supreme Court case, Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission. Choosing an organization over a person certainly posed its complexities, but eventually it turned out to be a pretty great piece. The next work I chose to use was my proposal. This is the paper that showed the most promise to be a great paper, but wasn't there yet. Through working with my peers and many revisions and edits later, it had the qualities of a great paper. It is a proposal for campaign reform. This is an issue that not many are willing to listen to, because they think it's socialist to put limits on campaigns. Take the time to actually read the paper, and you will discover that it isn't that bad of an idea. The last work I chose to include is my review on the movie 2016: Obama's America. I decided to adapt this paper into an audio review, because it adds more elements to the review and will keep the audience more interested. This project needed some new aspects that a paper just couldn't give. I chose to exclude my smaller works, because I felt that they were sloppy and unfinished. These are not qualities that a magazine should have.
Revision is one of the best things that I learned in this class. It helps tweak those aspects of your papers that just need a little more. Working in small groups and revising papers is an even more efficient way to get more accomplished. It's easier for us to understand the comments given by a peer review and get new ideas on how to change something that just isn't quite right.
For anyone that has the chance to work on this group project, I would recommend to work in person as often as possible. It is easier for the members to understand what you actually mean. Also, don't be afraid to ask for help. I am not one that is great at multimedia projects, but others in my group are multimedia gurus. By asking them for help on my extra projects as well as the translation project, it makes our magazine that much better.
A magazine is a daunting task for anyone to take on, but I believe that my group did a wonderful job. It looks great and all of it flows pretty well. The design is what brings it all together. I am by no means saying that our magazine is perfect. There is always room for improvement, but with the time allotted to us, and with the hard work of all of the group members, we made this magazine look like an actual magazine. We used creative ways to incorporate other pieces, not specifically featured in the magazine, as cartoons, haikus, etc. As you can tell by the works cited page, all of our projects have been well researched. They have also been edited and revised at least three times. Through working as a group, and getting business done, we created a magazine people might be interested in reading.
